Dr. Panangipalli Venugopal Citation
 
Life is a blessing if one is bestowed with excellent health. If not, every moment becomes an unrelenting exercise in misery. Hence, the importance  of  services medical scientists, who go about their task challenging diseases known and mysterious, can never be over-emphasized. Padma Bhushan Professor P.Venugopal is one such medicine man with an indomitable spirit.
 
Born on 6th July 1942 in Rajahmundhry, Andhra Pradesh, he was a brilliant student at school and college. At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he was awarded the Institutes Gold Medal for the Best Undergraduate by  India’s first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963 and the Gold Medal for the Merit of First Order for his Master’s degree from Dr. Zakir Hussain, the then President of India, in 1967. He followed up his M.B.B.S. and M.S. with M.Ch. (CTVS) with honours and joined the Faculty of All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971. Specializing in the field of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, he served AIIMS as Professor, Head of the Department, Chief, Dean, and since June 2003, he has been serving as its Director. He has also been awarded Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) by the respective Vice Chancellors of N.T.R. University of Medical Sciences, Andhra Pradesh and the Rajasthan University of Medical Sciences. 
 
Professor Venugopal had received advanced training at the world renowned Texas Heart Institute under Dr. Denton A. Cooley and the Children’s Hospital at Buffalo NY, USA under Dr. S. Subramanian in the field of Open Heart Surgery of adult and paediatric heart disease.  In 1974 he established the open heart surgery program at All India Institute of Medical Sciences under the stewardship of Prof. N. Gopinath and later assisted in the establishment of Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre at AIIMS.  This centre is the biggest Centre of its kind in India with seven Operation theatres. His team performs about 3500 open heart surgical procedures annually and during the last three decades, he has been associated with over 50,000 open heart surgeries and over 12000 closed heart surgeries.  He was instrumental in the First Heart Transplantation in India on August 3, 1994, and was felicitated by the then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. He introduced, for the first time in Asia, the implantation of Left Ventricular Assist Device.
 
But a successful transplantation was not the doctor’s only crowning achievement. Sri Venugopal is a pioneer in Autologous Stem Cells implantation for the repair of the myocardium as an alternative to the transplantation. He has successfully used this technique on 26 patients.
 
Awards are drawn to men of eminence, and they rained on Sri Venugopal. The Indira Priyadarsini Award, the Goyal Prize at Kurukshetra University given by the then Vice President of India, the Vijay Ratna Award by the International Friendship Society of India and the Award of Excellence by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation all in 1994; the Dr. N.C. Joshi Memorial Oration Award in 1995; the Dr. Jal R. Vakil Memorial Award presented by Vice President of India in 1996; the Dr. Pinnamaneni and Mrs Sithadevi Award in 1997; the Rashtra Ratan Award by Vishwa Jagriti Mission - Yuva Manch in 2000; the Dhanvantari Award by Dhanvantari Medical Foundation, Mumbai and the Life Time Achievement Award by Heart Care Foundation, Kochi in 2010 and many such awards speak eloquently about the stature and eminence of Professor Venugopal.  To crown this glory, he was awarded the ‘Padma Bhushan’ by the President of India in 1998. Earlier in 1997, he was appointed as the Honorary Surgeon to the President of India.
 
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India appointed him as a Member of the Advisory Panel of Experts for Quality Assurances in Health Care in India.
 
We are proud to present the Sivananda Eminent Citizen Award 2010 to Padma Bhushan Professor P. Venugopal for his immense contribution in the field of cardiac health. We wish him continued success in his efforts towards keeping hearts beating.
